Watch Talking Heads frontman David Byrne’s critically acclaimed Broadway show American Utopia in a one-of-a-kind film directed by Oscar and Emmy-winner Spike Lee. Recorded during its late 2019 to early 2020 run at Broadway’s Hudson Theatre in New York City, Byrne is joined by an ensemble of 11 musicians, singers, and dancers from around the globe, inviting audiences into a joyous dreamworld where human connection, self-evolution, and social justice are paramount.
The special includes performances of songs from Byrne’s 2018 solo album of the same name, in addition to popular Talking Heads favourites such as “Once in a Lifetime” and “Burning Down the House.” The musical numbers accompanied by brief monologues addressing various socio-political topics from police brutality, immigration to climate change.
The screening will be followed by a discussion between Hind Mezaina, curator of the film screening and Bryan Waterman who teaches in the Arts & Humanities Division at NYU Abu Dhabi and writes about the cultural history of literature and the arts in New York City. His book on the band Television’s album Marquee Moon chronicles the same downtown scene that produced David Byrne’s band Talking Heads in the 1970s. His current research covers New York in the Age of Andy Warhol (1962-87).
