Dubai Theatre Award Winning Shows
When we bring theatre to the UAE, quality and audience enjoyment is always our top priority. We work with some of the best theatre companies internationally and several of the shows we have brought to Dubai and the UAE have won local and international awards.
The Play That Goes Wrong
The Play That Goes Wrong was part of our theatrical line-up for 2014. At the time, the Mischief Theatre Company and the production was brand new – and reasonably unknown, but they had caused a stir on the Edinburgh Fringe circuit that year and we decided to book them for a week-long run. The show was a resounding success with both schools and the general public audiences – and is still the most brilliant piece of theatrical comedy we’ve ever seen. We knew they were going to go from strength to strength – and we weren’t wrong. By the time 2015 rolled around, they were fully booked for 18 months and were in the midst of a world tour with performance dates in LA and New York. And of course, they won a very much deserved Olivier Award. We hope to bring them back to Dubai in the near future.
The Tiger Who Came To Tea
The Tiger Who Came To Tea is one of our very favourite children’s productions. As a story book, we all read it to our own children, and as a stage production, it has been one of our most successful shows to date. The show’s director, the acclaimed David Woods OBE, has really managed to capture the quirky charm of Judith Kerr’s fairy tale about a little girl who is visited by a giant, friendly and very hungry tiger. The Sydney Opera House is also one of our favourite production companies, as they consistently produce amazing quality children’s productions with brilliant performers. We were delighted to be presented with the Time Out Kids Award Highly Commended in 2015 for this charmingly classic show.
We work very closely with the Moscow City Ballet and it has been our tradition to bring an annual ballet to audiences in the UAE for the past several years. We often choose a seasonal theme – and in 2014 we were thrilled to be able to bring The Nutcracker to both Dubai and Abu Dhabi theatres just before the Christmas break. To see such a magical production performed in the splendid theatrical surroundings of the grandiose Emirates Palace. The Nutcracker is a wonderful tale of adventure and romance mixed with fantasy and festive and as one of the world’s longest international touring ballet companies, is known all over the world for their unique style and grace. We were presented the Highly Commended category by the Time Out Kids Awards 2015 – and are extremely proud of this achievement. We certainly plan to bring the Moscow City Ballet out again to the UAE for many more seasons to come.
Dr Seuss is one of the world’s favourite children’s authors – and his incredibly successful series of books have helped millions of children the world over, learn to read – and most importantly, love reading. When we had the opportunity to bring Seussical – The Cat In The Hat to the UAE in 2015, we leapt at the chance. It was a gamble for us, because this was a brand new production by Sell-A Door which hadn’t yet been reviewed by London audiences. But we knew the company and their level of professionalism, so we also knew this would be a fantastic theatrical treat. It turned out we were right – and our audiences in the UAE loved the show. It was a sell-out production and we were also awarded the Time Out Kids Highly Commended category for bringing them to the region. We look forward to new projects with Sell-a-Door in the future.
