The Nutcracker Ballet in Dubai
It’s always a pleasure to bring the ballet to the UAE because it’s such a popular art form and so wonderful to experience. This December we were delighted to deliver the Moscow City Ballet back to the region so that they could perform their award-winning production of The Nutcracker in the festive season itself.
This will be the third time they have performed a production here. In 2013, they delivered a stunning productions of Cinderella and Swan Lake – which received standing ovations from the audiences.
Booking The Nutcracker
While many other countries in the world have to make do with ‘Nutcracker’tour dates when they get them (such is the popularity of the production), we made sure we were bringing our audiences this brilliant ballet at exactly the right time of year. We booked them a whole year in advance to ensure their presence, and secure two fantastic theatre locations – the Dubai Community Theatre Arts Centre (DUCTAC) and the magnificent Emirates Palace auditorium, which is the perfect festive setting for such a grand production.
Theatre production challenges
Of course, bringing an entire touring ballet company into a place like the UAE is always challenging. The paperwork alone is mind-boggling – with more than 50 visas and travel arrangements to make for the company, that includes not only dancers, but make-up artists, costume experts, stage and technical personnel and choreographers. Then there’s the issue of language – although we all manage to communicate in the end, it’s worth mentioning that as none of the company speaks either Arabic, French or English, and none of us speak Russian, it certainly creates some interesting situations!
A wonderful result
But all that work is so very worth it once you are seated in the theatre, the curtains part and the magic begins… And there is no ballet that has quite the ‘feel good’ factor as The Nutcracker. With it’s Christmassy sets, enchanting and fantastical story and set to Tchaikovsky ‘s original score, it’s a wonderful ballet for audiences of all ages.
